About OMOD

Opening Minds, Opening Doors (OMOD) is a public speaker training program for adults with disabilities. We combine the art of storytelling with public speaking skills, so our speakers can bring their stories to the general public and challenge misconceptions about what it means to live with a disability. Through presentations at conferences and other events, our speakers show people that we are all more alike than different. To receive updates on our trainings and events, email Eric Clow, call 512-454-9912, or join our OMOD Facebook group.

Preparing a Powerful Story for Presentation

The first stage of our training is an intensive six-week writing workshop which culminates in a public showcase for family, friends, and members of the community and features each participant presenting a polished and engaging personal story. This class is typically held on six consecutive Saturday afternoons in the spring.

Speaking Advocates!

After the initial six-week course, participants are welcome to attend a monthly group called Speaking Advocates where speakers continue writing and presenting stories and receive constructive feedback from their peers. The group is free and meets every third Saturday of the month from 1-3 PM in Room 130 of the AGE Building at 3710 Cedar St., Austin, TX 78705. We welcome anyone interested in presenting stories and socializing with our speakers. Completing the six-week writing workshop is not required to join the Speaking Advocates.

The Lion and The Pirate Open Mic

We invite both seasoned and aspiring speakers to join us at our free and inclusive monthly open mic at Malvern Books, 613 West 29th St., Austin, TX 78705 where you can share a story, poem, song, or other talent in a fun and supportive neighborhood bookstore. And if you don't have something to present, you can always attend to simply enjoy the entertainment, mingle with our open mic regulars, and savor the light refreshments and snacks. Beyond the Lion and Pirate, we seek new events and venues where our speakers can present to different audiences. We are also invited to present to different groups, which is another great opportunity for our trained speakers to gain exposure and confidence.
